Working with truly sharp tools makes all the difference. During this course at Nääs, you will learn how to grind and sharpen your own tools – from knives and chisels to axes, scissors, and plane irons.
We work with Tormek’s water-cooled sharpening system and various jigs that help you find the correct edge angle and create an even bevel. We then move on to honing and stropping – the steps that give the tools their final sharpness. During the course, you will also get to try different types of whetstones and learn how they are used.
Once you have mastered the technique, you will quickly notice the difference: a sharp edge provides better control, cleaner cuts, and a completely different feel in your work.
The course is suitable for both beginners and those who wish to deepen their knowledge. You do not need any prior experience – simply bring the tools you wish to work with.
The course instructor is Erik Lennerstedt, a sloyd teacher with a great passion for craftsmanship and tool maintenance. With both knowledge and humor, he will guide you through the steps and help you achieve a truly excellent result.
What to bring:
Bring at least one Mora knife or similar, as well as other tools you wish to sharpen – knives, scissors, axes, or chisels. A towel and an apron can be useful as we will be working with wet grinding.
Food & Accommodation:
The weekend includes welcome refreshments, coffee/tea, and a simple lunch in the form of a soup buffet served in Kaffestugan.
However, overnight accommodation and an evening meal are not included in the course arrangement. For those who wish, it is possible to book accommodation at Nääs.
Do take the opportunity to discover more during your visit—join a castle tour, visit Slottsboden or explore the building conservation centre Slöjd & Byggnadsvård, all just a stone’s throw from the course venue.
