Binding a broom is a craft with long traditions—and an unexpectedly physical and creative process. During this course at Nääs, you will learn to make both long-handled brooms and various types of hand brushes.
Over two days, you will work hands-on with several techniques and materials. You will start by preparing handles and materials, then move on to binding brooms and creating hand brushes in different shapes. The models include, for example, floor brooms, whisk brooms and smaller brushes—and you will take several finished pieces home with you.
You will work with materials such as broomcorn, tampico and arenga, and try different techniques for binding, stitching and finishing your brooms. The course is an introduction to the craft and is suitable both for beginners and for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of traditional handicraft.
Course leader: Raleigh Klotzek, an experienced craftsperson specialising in traditional techniques. Through work in several materials and studies around the world, she has deepened her knowledge in, among other things, broom making, woodcraft and weaving. With a pedagogical and inspiring approach, she makes learning both accessible and enjoyable.
What to bring:
If you wish, you can bring your own broom handle (approx. 1.2 metres long or waist height, made from dry wood). Materials will also be available on site. The work is physically demanding, so good hand strength is an advantage.
Language: Please note: The course is held in English, but the course leader has some understanding of Swedish.
Food & Accommodation:
The weekend includes a welcome coffee break, coffee/tea, and a simple lunch consisting of a soup buffet served at the Café.
However, overnight accommodation and an evening meal are not included in the course arrangement. If you wish, you can book accommodation at Nääs.
